music April 28: Fruit Bats at Gundlach Bundschu Winery

Partying it up in a barn might sound like something usually experienced in the South, but this weekend, Gundlach Bundschu winery hosts a concert in their beloved, 70-year-old barn for indie-rock band Fruit Bats. Led by songwriter Eric D. Johnson, the band has released a solid catalogue on Sub Pop records—and the Gun Bun barn is equipped with all the necessary barnlike requirements. Be prepared to rock among the old ladders, lanterns, tools and more while dancing around to the upbeat sounds and drinking some Gun Bun wine. So, bats in a barn? Why not? Who would have thought WD-40 and a handsaw would provide a great setting to anything besides a horror film? biking April 28: Napa Bike Fest in Napa

What’s a city to do when there’s a large, empty building that’s been closed for almost four years? Hold a bike fest in it! This weekend, the former COPIA center site plays host to the first annual Napa Bike Fest, a celebration for all types of cycling enthusiasts. With three different bike rides for different ability levels, everyone will have a chance to ride. After a cruise around town, there’ll also a BMX bike show, bike movies, live music, food and even a swap meet to sell or exchange bikes or bike parts. It may seem like a small silver lining to COPIA’s bankruptcy—or more like silver spokes—on Saturday, April 28, at the former COPIA Center. 500 First St., Napa. 9am. Free. www.napabike.org.

food April 28: Pastapalooza for Parks at Santa Rosa Vets Building

People do crazy things when they’re in love—leave voicemails at 3am, show up at the other person’s house unannounced, and maybe participate in things they wouldn’t admit being proud of later on. But if you’re in love with county and state parks, there’s no way you’re going to let them be taken away without a fight—or, in this case, a feast. Head to the Pastapalooza event with “Pasta King” Art Ibleto for pasta, live music, a silent auction and much more to benefit local parks. Luckily, Jack London State Park is being spared from the chopping block, but Annadel and others are still in danger. authors April 27: Dan Piraro at 142 Throckmorton Theatre

When is stepping back from a job appropriate? After a week? A year? Twenty-five years? Cartoonist Dan Piraro, creator of Bizarro, has finally completed his 10,000th cartoon and is deciding to take a much-deserved break. Well it’s sort of a break—he’s going to be touring on his “other” claim to fame, his one-man comedy show. Is pursing a new profession really the best way to take a break from 25 years of work? I guess the joke’s on him this time. Consistently funny in newsprint and garnering rave reviews for his variety show, Piraro is a national treasure, with a smart hat to boot. outdoors April 28: Spring Fling at Slide Ranch

“Family fun” isn’t generally a very persuasive term to the average person, but this weekend there’s an exception to the rule. Slide Ranch boasts amazing scenery, and their annual Spring Fling open house is full of creative activities you won’t find at the usual family picnic. The day includes workshops on milking cows and making butter, food tasting from local farms and seeing a sweater made out of raw wool. There are also guided hikes through the headlands, and even one from the Golden Gate Bridge to the beach. film April 19-26: Tiburon International Film Festival

It’s that time of the year again—time for the 11th annual Tiburon International Film Festival! Providing movie enthusiasts with over 100 different films from 50 countries, this year’s lineup promises nonstop movies from up-and-coming film directors, as well as old hands. Moviegoers will also have a chance to hear professor of cinema Joseph McBride from San Francisco State University. A screenwriter and author, McBride has written biographies of Steven Spielberg and John Ford. On Friday, April 27, there will also be a dinner and awards ceremony at Sam’s Restaurant. books April 24: Melanie Thorne at Book Passage

Sometimes things happen that are all too easy to turn a blind eye to, or just completely disregard, because it makes us uncomfortable. Local author Melanie Thorne addresses a personal topic that many people probably have some experience with. Her novel Hand Me Down involves a young girl in a broken home who tries to protect her younger sister from her alcoholic father, but they eventually become separated after a drastic decision by her mother. After considering whether it was better to write the story as a novel or not, she decided to stick with fiction, because “it reveals truths more cleanly and clearly then they appear in real life,” she says. comedy April 20: Mike Birbiglia at the Wells Fargo Center

Birbiglia? It’s Italian. But not real Italian—more like “Olive Garden” Italian, as Mike Birbiglia likes to describe himself. This comedian makes everyone else’s uncomfortable moments in life look like minor, silly misunderstandings when he talks about his experiences. A regular contributor on NPR’s This American Life, this one-man show keeps the crowds feeling sarcastically satisfied with his outlooks on life’s experiences. His shows “Sleepwalk with Me” and “My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend” have won and been nominated for many awards as an outstanding solo act, and “Sleepwalk with Me” was recently turned into a film that won the audience award at the Sundance Music Festival. music April 18 and 21: Lisa Loeb and Squeeze in Napa

Is there any chance you really, really liked the 1994 romantic comedy/drama Reality Bites? If so, then this weekend could be the best weekend ever for you. Believe it or not, Lisa Loeb and Squeeze are coming to Napa. Unfamiliar with their work? Lisa Loeb is best known for her song “Stay (I Missed You)” and for her cat-eye glasses that she wore in the song’s video, where she’s pouting in an empty room. Squeeze is the British band, more popular in the U.K. than the U.S., who made a name for themselves over here after the release of the hit “Tempted,” which Janeane Garofalo sings, awkwardly, while driving a car in Reality Bites.
