film June 6: Mark Cantor's 'Jazz Night at the Movies' at the Raven Theater

Over 4,000 clips strong, the incredible film archive of Mark Cantor is a jazz lover’s dream: rare and unseen live footage of greats like Miles Davis, Billie Holiday and Chet Baker abound. But since Cantor’s collection is almost entirely on actual film, chances to see it strung through a projector are rare. This week, Cantor stops by the Healdsburg Jazz Festival to present Jazz Night at the Movies, a selection of his films screened with Cantor’s own funny, insightful commentary—a combination that often turns casual jazz fans into obsessives. cars June 2-3: Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival at Infineon Raceway

I drive a 1964 Volvo, and it’s so recognizable and unlike other cars on the road that I often joke how I could never have an affair because someone would notice it driving away from the fleabag motel and call my wife. So you’ve got to really pity the drivers of the completely unique cars at the Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival—that is, if they want to cheat on their wives. Which I don’t! Really! It’s just a way of showing that the 400-odd cars at Infineon this weekend—vintage Ferraris, Maseratis, Jaguars and more—aren’t like the other cars on the road. I’m just . . . There’s no writing my way out of this one, is there? Oh well. Check out old cars and don’t cheat on your wife on Saturday–Sunday, June 2–3, at Infineon Raceway. 8:30am each day. $20–$40. 800.870.RACE.

comedy June 2: Adam Carolla at the Uptown Theatre

It was in 1998 when a caller to the popular sex-advice radio show Loveline asked what sort of measures might be appropriate to help curb teenage pregnancy. What followed was an eight-minute rant about absent fathers, daughters in need of attention, and unsupportive boyfriends—as well as murdered liquor store owners, prison structure, deadbeat carpenters, welfare, city permits and Joseph Stalin. In other words, what followed was classic Adam Carolla, the hard-talking former construction-worker-turned-comedian. music May 30: Billy Martin & Wil Blades at Hopmonk Tavern

When the Hammond B-3 master Jimmy Smith ushered in a golden era for the jazz organ in the late 1950s, he did so with a basic trio of organ, guitar and drums. The absence of a bassist was revolutionary at the time, but no bass was needed, since Smith had developed a mastery of the walking bass pedal. Enter Billy Martin and Wil Blades, who perform as an organ-drum duo. There’s no guitar in their music, but with chops like these, it’s rarely missed. As one-third of Medeski, Martin & Wood, Martin dances all over the drum kit with a creative sureness; for his part, Blades isn’t afraid to push the organ to newer territories, either. music May 26: Beth Custer Ensemble at Tres Sabores Winery

In 2009, the Beth Custer Ensemble shared a bill at the Go Left Fest at Yoshi’s with such free-jazz pioneers as Roswell Rudd, Michael Allen, Sunny Murray and others. Doing as the Romans do, Custer pushed the borders of jazz in an experimental performance that wiggled, twisted and quaked. Three years later, Custer has premiered her latest song “For the Grace of Any Man,” possibly the world’s only gospel-tinged danceable pop sing with a bass clarinet solo. In other words, Custer is always searching. This week, her ensemble accompanies the 1929 Russian surrealist film My Grandmother, which was suppressed by the Russian government for its depiction of public officials as comically inept. music May 26: Tuck & Patti at the Raven Theater

In an epic case of trolling the entire internet, Spin magazine recently published a list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” that ignored such musty givens of guitar lists as Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen and Joe Satriani. Instead, it picked the fresh(er) faces of Johnny Greenwood, Carrie Brownstein and Doug Martsch. Boy, were people pissed! We might include on our own similar list Tuck Andress, who is a perfect antidote to the cock-rock wankiness so rampant in the world of tired guitar gods. With his wife Patti Cathcart, he’s created a guitar-vocal partnership that’s technically mesmerizing while still retaining emotional resonance. And wouldn’t you know it? music May 25: The North Bay Experiment at Jackson Theater

Built on donated land 12 years ago, the Sonoma Country Day School took the saved money and built a top-notch performance space, the Jackson Theater. The theater’s performances haven’t been limited to recitals for schoolchildren paying up to $19,000 a year in tuition, though; it’s also hosted Rialto Cinemas screenings, the Healdsburg Jazz Festival and musical guests from Little Feat to Dave Brubeck. This week, the well-outfitted stage sees bands that ordinarily play house parties and DIY spaces, namely Not to Reason Why, Kinship (formerly Goodriddler), and touring acts Echorev (pictured) and a performance-art, spoken-word-dance duo of Annie Kahane and Alex Hersler. It’s called the North Bay Experiment, and it’s happening on Friday, May 25, at Jackson Theater. 4400 Day School Place, Santa Rosa. 7:30pm. $15. 707.935.3035.

outdoors May 26: Great Blue Heron Hall Opening at Laguna de Santa Rosa

You know the house when you see it: it’s just off Occidental Road, right before that bridge where you can see all the pretty egrets in the laguna below. Atop a slight hill, it stood for years—the Stone Farmhouse, one of Santa Rosa’s oldest, dating back to 1865. It’s now the offices for the Laguna de Santa Rosa Foundation, which protects and restores the laguna, aka That Awesome Expanse of Water and Wildlife You See While Riding Your Bike on High School Road. But the Stone Farmhouse can only hold so much, and the foundation this week opens its new Great Blue Heron Hall. music May 24: Tab Benoit at the Mystic Theatre

You know what I like to do after dropping a tab of acid? I like to go down to the corner store and get a six-pack of Tab, bring it home and open about five tabs in Firefox, and just hit the “TAB” button on my keyboard over and over and over and over again. This causes a hallucinatory file cabinet to emerge from my skull and appear floating before me; I open it and scan each file’s tab until I find the holy grail: a music book of Frank Zappa guitar tabs. After shredding on “The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue” for four hours, I head to the local bar and drink Old Grand-Dad until I come down, leave without paying my bar tab, and head to Petaluma to see Tab Benoit on Thursday, May 24, at the Mystic Theatre. 21 Petaluma Blvd. N., Petaluma. 8pm. $21–$23. 707.765.2121.
