Jan. 13: Lewis Black at the Marin Center

Posted by on Wed, Jan 11, 2012 at 5:05 PM

lewis.jpgAll comedians have a certain trademark, be it Patton Oswalt (drinking), Robin Williams (prattling like an ADHD child with Tourette’s) or Dave Chapelle (only playing secret shows announced hours before that start at midnight and go until 5am). Personally, I’m a fan of Lewis Black’s trademark: when he relates a story of unfathomable stupidity, perhaps involving Republicans, he shakes his head sharply, letting his jowls wiggle across his mouth, creating a distinctive “blubba-da blubba-da” sound. One never knows when the blubba-da blubba-da will strike, but when it does, it never fails to get a laugh—especially when combined with Black’s sharp wit. Blubba-da blubba-da the night away with Black on Friday, Jan. 13, at the Marin Center. 10 Avenue of the Flags, San Rafael. 8pm. $40—$75. 415.473.6800.

Oct. 16: Steven Wright at the Uptown Theatre

Mention Steven Wright in the Bohemian newsroom, and various off-putting monotone impersonations of the famously apathetic comedian will swiftly follow. Since tickets to our oh-so-hilarious newsroom aren’t for sale, you may have to settle for seeing the lethargically voiced funnyman in person. Famous for his one-liners and impeccable comedic timing, Steven Wright and his “this joke is so not funny that it’s funny” style come to the West Coast on Sunday, Oct. 16 at the Uptown Theatre. 1350 Third St., Napa. 8pm. $40. 707.259.0123.

Oct. 15: The Gong Show at The Toad in the Hole

As Tyler Durden says in Fight Club, “You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake.” Although many of us, myself included, have been told from childhood that we can be or do anything our hearts desire, the judges at Santa Rosa’s Gong Show may strongly disagree. Though acts of silliness are encouraged and expected, only the real deal will earn the grand cash prize. Bring your “A” game against a real-live gong on Saturday, Oct. 15, at The Toad in the Hole. 116 Fifth St., Santa Rosa. 9pm. Free. 707.544.8623.

Love him or hate him—and boy, do people hate him—Gilbert Gottfried is still alive and kicking. Even after some ill-timed tsunami jokes cost him his job as the all-knowing and equally annoying Aflac duck, Gottfried still manages to keep his sense of humor intact. If you enjoy the sound of nails on a chalkboard, have a preference toward awkward jokes that make you want to hide under your seat or simply still love his incredible scene in The Aristocrats, Gottfried performs on Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Lincoln Theater. 100 California Dr., Yountville. 8pm. $35–$55. 707.944.9900.

When I was a kid, Shields and Yarnell ruled the school. I’d do that “trapped in a box and can’t get out” routine on a disturbingly regular basis. But make no mistake, the 52-year-old San Francisco Mime Troupe won’t be doing any of that silly stuff when they bring 2012: The Musical to Mill Valley. “We are satirists seeking to make you laugh at the absurdities of contemporary life,” they declare; see them on Wednesday, Aug. 31, at the Mill Valley Community Center. 180 Camino Alto, Mill Valley. 6:30pm. Free. 415.285.1717.

Famous for her insult standup comedy, fashion critique, acting roles and bountiful cosmetic surgeries, Joan Rivers certainly isn’t afraid of offending anyone. When she isn’t bashing on Betty White and making married couples uncomfortable, she’s actually fairly charming. Come hear and fear the glamorous little lady with the New York accent on Friday, Aug. 26, at the Uptown Theatre. 1350 Third St., Napa. $60–$75. 8pm. 707.259.0123.

June 4-5: Pride Weekend in Santa Rosa and Guernville

There are two main events for Pride Weekend, and neither is to be missed. Julie Goldman, a self-described New York “butch-lez,” and Ali Mafi, “maybe the world’s only gay Iranian comic,” headline Pride Comedy Night on Saturday, June 4, at 8pm at the Wells Fargo Center (50 Mark West Springs Road, Santa Rosa; $19–$35; 707.546.3600). The next day sees the fabulously titled celebration Gay Sera, Syrah, with a morning parade down Main Street in Guerneville and ending with a festival featuring Coyote Grace, Sistahs in the Pit, Ananta, Polkanomics and others on Sunday, June 5, at the Guerneville Lodge (15905 River Road, Guerneville; 12pm; free). May 27: Seth Meyers at the Uptown Theatre

Posted by on Wed, May 25, 2011 at 1:53 PM

At the White House Correspondents’ Dinner last month, Seth Meyers roasted the shit out of Donald Trump. On television, fantastic cutaway camera shots caught “the Don” iron-jawed, the “fox on his head” practically wiggling to get free. Hopefully, the fresh-faced Saturday Night Live head writer and host of “Weekend Update” will dust off some of his sardonic Trump jokes (and maybe the one about Larry King) when he brings his very funny standup act to Napa this week. Seth Meyers gets smart on Friday, May 27, at the Uptown Theatre. 1350 Third Street, Napa. $45–$55. 8pm. 707.259.0123.

Feb. 12: Bill Cosby at the Marin Center

In 2008, none other than Karl Rove credited Bill Cosby with indirectly steering the American consciousness toward the historic act of electing a black president. Cosby set such a positive family example with The Cosby Show, Rove implied, that he paved the way for Obama’s victory. And yet Cosby—notoriously critical of modern lifestyle trends among young black men offstage—never talks politics in his act. Instead, he serves up the usual bits about dentists, doctors, children and wives on Saturday, Feb.12, at the Marin Center. Avenue of the Flags, San Rafael. 5pm and 8pm. $38–$75.415.499.6800.

Jan. 14: Shelly Berman at 142 Throckmorton Theater

Like Mort Sahl and Dick Gregory, the button-up mind of Shelly Berman turned the world diagonal in the 1960s though “comedy” albums that were more cerebral exercises than cheap guffaw-inducements. A common party trick when records like Inside Shelly Berman were released was to play Berman’s routines on the stereo and single out the squares from the with-it guests based on who “got it” or not. Since 2002, he’s appeared as Larry David’s dad on Curb Your Enthusiasm, and onstage, Berman usually does a few of his classic routines mixed with new material. For this event, he’s extended his show to include even more older material, and he’ll be introduced by none other than Mort Sahl on Friday, Jan. 14, at 142 Throckmorton Theater. 142 Throckmorton, Mill Valley. 8pm. $25–$35. 415.383.9600.
