Mar. 4: Risk-A-Cabaret at Aubergine

Posted By on Wed, Mar 2, 2011 at 10:25 AM

After a short hiatus, the monthly burlesque revue known as Risk-A Cabaret returns this weekend with its bare skin and signature rule-bending style. “There are girls and boys of all shapes and sizes,” organizer Jodi Waseca told the Bohemian last year, “drag queens and kings, musicians, clowns, aerialists, fire performers, sideshow acts—you name it.” With male belly dancer Paige Lawrence, “burlesque mama” Violet Streak, samba queen Milk Shake and fire dancers, accordions and comedians, the night also celebrates Mardi Gras with the Fourth Street New Orleans Jazz Band. Catch the action on Friday, March 4, at Aubergine. 755 Petaluma Ave., Sebastopol. 9pm. $7-$10. 707.861.9190.

Feb. 26: LINES at Lincoln Theatre

Posted By on Wed, Feb 23, 2011 at 10:03 AM

Like working in the wine industry after Sideways or working in a record store after High Fidelity, it must be incredibly strange to be dancing in a ballet troupe after the widespread hullabaloo over Black Swan. Can you imagine trying to explain your trained craft to someone who’s simply imagining you as Mila Kunis? Fortuitously, Alonzo King’s LINES ballet company is daring, creative and modern enough to separate itself from the film’s traditional styles; see them in action on Saturday, Feb. 26, at the Lincoln Theatre. 100 California Drive, Yountville. 8pm. $39–$49. 707.944.9900.

Jan. 8: Beats of the Bay at Marin Center

Posted By on Wed, Jan 5, 2011 at 5:02 PM

If you were headed to a recital by a local dance school, you might expect numbers set to music by Madonna, Lady Gaga or Daft Punk. But for the Love2Dance studio, which since 2002 has been teaching kids the art of body movin’ in Novato, this year it’s all about the Bay. This weekend sees their annual dance recital presenting choreography strictly backed by the music of the Bay Area, be it Santana, Journey or the big baller himself, E-40. Have you ever wondered what a synchronized routine to Metallica might look like? Wonder no more when the Love2Dance studio presents ‘Beats of the Bay’ on Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Marin Center. 10 Avenue of the Flags, San Rafael. 6pm. $18–$24. 415.499.6800.

Feb. 12: The California Bad Boyz at the Last Day Saloon

Posted By on Wed, Feb 10, 2010 at 2:38 PM

Oh my god Taylor, look at these guys on this flyer. The ‘California Bad Boyz.’ Oh. My. God. Male strippers. Let’s go. Let’s totally go. You have to come with me! Who cares about your stupid singles mixer that night?! This is girl’s night out. I’m not sitting at home alone on Valentine’s Day weekend watching TiVos of Days and feeling sorry for myself. Here, look at this guy. Total Rico Suave, with the bandana and the rosary. Audrey’d like him. This other guy’s your type, the one three to the right, the fitness instructor. Shut up! He totally is! Remember that Atkins diet guy you dated for way too long? Or look, how about this guy? The “I’m using this black-and-white headshot from 1987 with my gelled hair and Local Motion tank top because I’m 44 now and not as hot” guy? Look look look look look. It’s two hours long. Shut up. I wonder if they serve mojitos! We’re totally going. Call Audrey and Michelle and tell ’em it’s on Friday, Feb. 12, at the Last Day Saloon. 120 Fifth St., Santa Rosa. 9pm. $15–$20. 707.545.2343.Gabe Meline
