Far from the traditional male beauty pageant with bodybuilders and Speedos, the 10th annual Mr. Healdsburg Pageant features everyday members of the community. Each contestant creates a nickname and competes in the talent, eveningwear, beachwear and interview categories. This year’s seven finalists include 74-year-old Mr. Basso Profundo, who plans to blow the crowd away with his singing voice; Mr. Hot Stuff, who hopes to wow everyone with his winning looks; and Mr. Hotlicks, who started a Facebook campaign in attempts to seal the deal. Posted by on Thu, Nov 8, 2012 at 12:11 PM

flow-state1.jpg
I’d like to give thanks to Warren Miller for continuing to make films about daredevil skiers and snowboarders, whizzing down horrendously steep and icy mountain tops to almost certain death, all of which I get to watch from the comfort of a warm theatre seat while stuffing my mouth with popcorn. You too can live vicariously through Miller’s latest flick, Flow State, premiering Nov. 17 at the Marin Center, with a pre-party co-sponsored by the Bohemian and Lagunitas Brewing Company. Drop by to enter the raffle for tickets to the premiere, a Spyder jacket, Heavenly passes, winter snow gear and Warren Miller apparel. If that’s not enough, there’ll be pint specials flowing all night. The Flow State pre-party happens on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at Lagunitas Tap Room. 1280 N. McDowell Ave., Petaluma. 6pm—8pm. Free. 707.527.1200.

May 12: Spruce Deuce Open House at the Feed Barn

Posted by on Wed, May 9, 2012 at 2:00 PM

1.FeedBarn.jpg
From the outside, the Feed Barn is just what it sounds like—a large empty warehouse that used to be a feed store. But for the last two years, it’s been home-away-from-home to a coterie of artists, makers, tinkerers and musicians, who this week throw open the doors in a spring open house for a showcase of dizzying creativity. Included among the festivities—with food provided by chef Mark Malicki—is the unveiling of the mighty Spruce Deuce, a large kinetic sculpture designed and built by the masterful David Farish and Skye Barnett. Live music and plenty of beer round out what’s easily the coolest thing happening in Rincon Valley on Saturday, May 12, at the Feed Barn. 55 Middle Rincon Road, Santa Rosa. Free. 4pm–midnight. No phone.

The American public at large ignored healthy eating with the introduction of the South Beach and Atkins diets, which promised dropping a few pants sizes through a total disregard for a person’s overall health. Conversely, the Dhyana Center provides locals with the tools for a healthy lifestyle. The center celebrates the grand opening of its new education lofts with an all-day party including eclectic music and cirque performances, dance, Ayurvedic apothecary, food and a silent auction. Festivities commence Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Dhyana Center Educational Lofts. Basso Building, 186 N. Main St., Second Floor, Sebastopol. 1–10pm. Free. 707.823.8818.

One hundred years ago this Saturday, a young pilot named Fred Wiseman delivered three letters from Petaluma to Santa Rosa by airplane, thereby completing the first airmail flight in history. Never mind that he crashed along the way—it’s still an honor for Santa Rosa, where Wiseman bought parts from a local bicycle shop to build his plane after visiting the Wright Brothers themselves. In conjunction with the exhibit ‘Post By Air,’ a live simulcast discussion with Smithsonian curators about Wiseman’s famous flight takes place on Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Sonoma County Museum. 425 Seventh St., Santa Rosa. 11am. $2–$5. 707.579.1500.
