September 19: West End Alley Cat Race at Toad in the Hole

Posted By on Wed, Sep 15, 2010 at 10:35 AM

If you’re in line at the market for bagels this Sunday and suddenly see some frenzied people approach in bike helmets, holding cans of soup, it might be a good idea to let them take cuts. Chances are they’re part of the West End Alley Cat Race and Scavenger Hunt. Now in its third year, the race, benefiting Redwood Empire Food Bank, puts contestants out on bicycles to various locally owned markets, where they buy designated food items from a list. The food is donated to charity, but the cyclist who makes it back first wins a trophy and a special bike-related prize (choosing the route is key). Some buy more food than is required, like Bret Gave of the Santa Rosa Trek Bicycle Store, who last year came back with ten times the amount of food on the list! It’s all for a good cause on Sunday, Sept. 19, at the Toad in the Hole. 116 Fifth St., Santa Rosa. Starts at 3pm. Free. 707.544.8623.

May 8: Art and Vista Hikes at the di Rosa Art Preserve

Posted By on Wed, May 5, 2010 at 11:03 AM

Hiking season is here, and there’s nothing like discovering a new, rarely used trail. That’s where the di Rosa Preserve comes in, offering guided, two-and-a-half hour Art and Vista Hikes through its outdoor sculpture gallery and up to the top of Milliken Peak, the highest summit in the Carneros region. On a clear day atop the peak, hikers can see both the Napa River and the San Pablo Bay, and there’s no other way to hike the Milliken trail than through di Rosa’s exclusive opportunity. Hikes are moderately strenuous, so bring water and good shoes while a guide gives insight into the native flora and fauna. After climbing to the top with one of the best views in the region, you’ll settle back down into one of the best collections of California art in the world. It’s a perfect springtime field trip on Saturday, May 8, at the di Rosa Art Preserve. 5200 Sonoma Hwy., Napa. 10am. $15. 707.226.5991; RSVP required.Gabe Meline

Aug. 28-30: Napa Fresh Aire Festival at the Westin Verasa Hotel

Posted By on Wed, Aug 26, 2009 at 4:14 PM

Imagine yourself running through a field of daisies, ambient smooth jazz is playing from somewhere and the sun is shining. Your pores—and chakras, too—are freshly exfoliated, and open from a sunrise yoga session. You are one with the universe, Vitamin Water in one hand, a bundle of bio-dynamic snacks in the other. No, this is not a dream. It could be you if you head to the Napa Fresh Aire Festival, a weekend-long event featuring an exposition of spiritual health and eco-conscious products, in-depth yoga seminars, mood music, nature appreciating, chi-aligning and a whole range of enlightened speakers, including everyone from acclaimed New Age health guru Dr. Andrew Weil to the “sexpert” authors of How to Have Magnificent Sex and Your Long Erotic Weekend. Breathe deep, baby. Things are going to get groovy Aug. 28–30 at the Westin Verasa Hotel. 1314 McKinstry St., Napa. $99–$175 with registration. 888.825.5484. www.napafreshairefest.com.Daniel Hirsh
