Ok, I have to share a story on this one. We slept in the church and in Dominic and Sam Raitanos semi truck, we were all stranded in this small part right on the edge of town. The only way you could go from here is to Armstrong Woods Park. No way out other than helicopter. So the funny part of this is those of us that were in our "party" phase had a blast because we could party (and we were not obnoxious I dont think) and the police could not do anything about it. We just drank from our "silver bags" from the soaked boxes of cheap wine that floated out of the Safeway store and felt it was funny that at 17-18 years old we could drink and get away with it. Wow, this is bringing back major memories.
I cannot believe that it is still running. I helped to build that Safeway, Dominic and Sam Raitano were a huge part of my life as Sam and I were together for many years and I spent many soaked days during the flood saving the collectibles from the arcade, packing up video game systems, taking the semi truck across the bridge to save some police officers. Being helped across the main road with a 55 mph current holding onto a rope and the fire fighters helping us across. I remembering them opening the doors to the Safeway, and we ran around with a boat and picked up all the "silver bags" that were the insides of the cheap boxes of wine. We partied hard, it made things seem better. Spent too many days at the Vets building, but the military helicopter ride was incredible. Being 18 at the time it was so crazy!!
Wow, Herb what a flashback to see your face. And the flood well, I lived through it, the stories are long and entertaining and will put some together to share. But for now, so happy to see this being done...brought tears to my eyes. I lost my best friend, Laurie Levengood (Goerke) just a few months ago and this brought back such tremendous memories and some tears.
Dominic is my mother's brother, which makes him my uncle by birth.
hello i like it
I knew Dominic well, from the old video game arcade he had in the Safeway parking lot. He was an expert piano player and a bottle expert. His son Sam lives in San Jose.
i really love michael jackson ever since i was a very small kid`
I'm so bummed I missed it. I love the name too.
This article is another reminder that when in doubt ALWAYS get up off the couch and head down to a local arts and music event. Surprises like this night makes it all worth it!
The location is River Road (looking East), near what was previously the Guerneville Lumber Yard. The sign in the background, to the right, is the West County Community Services offices. The house was from River Road.
This was at the St. Elizabeth's ancillary building directly behind the Guerneville Fire Department. All rescue personnel and volunteer's were served 3 meals a day there, by volunteer cooks from local restaurants.
This picture directly ties in with the photo from St. Elizabeth's Church, as folks were rounded up at the church, then taken up to the Cemetery. The roar of the "Chinook" helicopter was unmistakable. They could transport about 40-50 people per trip, with 6-7 trips in an 8 hour period.
This was a well documented story that was in all the major news stories, and indeed it was Andy, as he seemingly was unaware of just how deep that segment of Old River Road was at the time.
Dominic passed away a few years ago. He was actually a very affluent property owner on the River and in San Jose. His Flea Market, next to Safeway is still run every weekend by my dad, Herb Genelly Jr.
I don't recognize the kids, but they were staged there for a Landing Zone we set up to evacuate folks via a Chinook (Military ) Helicopter up the hill at the Cemetery.
That appears to have been a group of Firefighter's with the Cazadero Fire Department. Yes, I (Herb Genelly) am at the head of the stretcher, but I was working for the Gureneville Fire Department, and would have responded as part of the Ambulance Crew.

They're remaking the birds in 2014. When I first heard about the remake, I literally screamed. I'm sure the remake will be good, but Annie Hayworth will not be the same. Nobody can be better than Pleshette. Period end of story. Gabe, I am 15, but I watched the birds with my grandmother about a year ago, and I fell in love with Hayworth, too. When the birds is remade, originality will die, but nothing could compare to Suzanne Pleshette's Annie Hayworth.
Andy Fava was my godfather and Ida DeWitt was my mother and she owned Buck's Restaurant in Guerneville...this is Andy Fava behind my mom's restaurant....this was one of her homes.
Re: “The Guerneville Flood Project: Helicopter Rescue at the Cemetery”
Funny, I remember leaving by helicopter after 5-6 days as I did not want to leave, from a business that was about 2 miles down the road heading towards Armstrong Woods Park. It was a big parking lot, chain link fence and it was a business of some sort. Sorry memory is very foggy on details. I do remember sitting right next to the tv camera man so I did not get on tv because he could not swing the camera around on me I was too close. It was an incredible flight in so many ways.
