Re: “So Long, 2013!

I concur w/ Thomas re the women who spoke addressing the effect that Mr. Carrillo's conduct has had on them and those they know. It was incredibly brave of them and very emotionally wrenching to not only hear their stories vis-a-vis Efren's actions, but the lasting impact of fear that permeates their lives forever after. This is not a fairy tale and should not be swept away.

Re: “So Long, 2013!

Bravo to all of the contributors to this piece. You did a great job summarizing some of the most important issues which garnered the spotlight and captured the imaginations of the people of Sonoma County last year. But I must clarify something. You report that Ms. Darling says that nobody is talking about the effect that Mr. Carrillo's conduct has had on women. This is not entirely true. While I (and others) perceived a dearth of outcry of shock and disgust from the women in this county for a time after this shameful incident occurred, that all changed at the second meeting held by the Citizens for Accountability which was held at the Sebastopol Grange a week before Thanksgiving. At that time, several women, one by one, got up out of their chairs, bravely faced the members of the large crowd and spoke of their own past unrelated experiences and how hearing about Mr. Carrillo's reprehensible conduct in the early morning hours of July 13, 2013, violated their right to feel safe in their own home. Then at the third meeting held by the Citizens for Accountability, several women once again rose up out of their chairs, took the mic and expressed similar feelings. Also, it should be pointed out that I and others have been raising this issue since Day One of this incident; in fact, I wrote a letter to this publication, which was published, identifying the REAL victim as the woman who, at 3:40 in the morning on July 13, 2013, was so terrified by Efren Carrillo's actions that she found it necessary to call 9-1-1 not once, but TWICE. I will reiterate once again that I stand with this victim and hope that she will avail herself of each and every opportunity which may become available to her in her personal pursuit of justice. And it is my sincere hope that she is receiving the support that she needs to get her through this most trying time.

Re: “George Takei's New Trek

Although I haven't been much of a "Trekkie", an Interred-Asian, or specifically gay man, I still find the career and life of George Takei fascinating. The author of this article paints a picture of an uncomplicated American original who has survived, and is now thriving in an ambiguous culture with an uncertain future. His bravery is demonstrated when virtual and actual worlds of real people meet. It is not surprising that he has gained an immense following in the realm of social media. A man of this caliber would be a natural for political office in any arena. His ending statement about humor being the connective glue that binds us, speaks of his humanity. Someone with this much insight and wisdom is desperately needed to lead us out of our virtual prison camps and into a closet that fits us all ...(Pun intended).

Re: “A Dream Interrupted

Looove Swami Steve! Met him here in Virginia Beach a time or two. I would like to add my piece to the mosaic, drives me nuts that I seem to be the only person even aware of the existence of this "Rosetta Stone" book, entitled: "Appointment in Dallas" - from an unimpeachable source, one Hugh MacDonald. I read it in the mid-seventies and it still exists on AMAZON! I just downloaded a digital copy but there are still some paperbacks in circulation!!! Hugh was the preeminent Police Officer, war hero, inventor of the "Identakit", CIA, Barry Goldwater's Chief of Security, etc. He used his long career in the international shadow world of spies and covert agents to find and interview the guy who caused Kennedy's head to explode. He got $50K because that's what he charges for heads-of-state. Find it, read it, share it!!!

Re: “A Dream Interrupted

Swami Steve's answer is a profound answer reflecting his ability to go deep into himself, and history, and to remember....... Where were you when you heard the president was shot? Thanks for this remarkable article. Shall read this book.

Following is one the most brilliant and unsettling paragraphs, I have ever read about the perceptual distortions that are currently going on in our news media......!!! It says:

Swami Steve was/is WONDERFUL, WISE and WITTY, making his troublesome observations even palatable. Most useful quote from a House Concert of his, in Austin Texas, was that Swami Steve said "the only one's speaking the truth on television, during these times, were the comedians, not the news-broadcasters." What a wake-up call! .... I have found that to be true and have watched Jon Stewart, Steven Colbert and Rachel Maddow, ever since.

Could it be we are in "the dark side of democracy" which Jefferson warned us about, when people of privilege would take advantage of the others, less fortunate, actually not realizing they are a majority? Anytime politicians start cutting public education, I remember Jefferson's warning, especially here in Texas. Jefferson invested his land and personal fortune in education, starting the University of Virginia, because he believed so much in education for us all to be informed and participate in evolving the best form of government possible for ALL.

The authors of a remarkably well-developed book on the cycles of American history, The Fourth Turning sub-titled their researched work, "An American Prophecy—What the Cycles of History Tell Us About America’s Next Rendezvous with Destiny." Read how an economist and an historian can predict that we will elect and anti-government president in 2000. Strauss and Howe did that in the mid-'90's.

How will those of us, living through this pivotal time in history live well with our heritage into a sustainable future? ..for our children and their children? Where will this next century take us and what is my part in that? Who does speak the TRUTH ! Seems Swami Steve does!

Re: “A Dream Interrupted

Thanks for writing this Steve. I'm sharing it on Facebook and will plan to reread Douglass's book. A couple of recent books I've acquired are also eye opening. "Me and Lee" by Judiyth Vary Baker gives a comprehensive picture of the real Lee Harvey Oswald. "Mary's Mosaic" by Peter Janney, the son of a CIA operative who was deeply involved, throws a lot of light on the CIA involvement as well as the elimination of people who knew too much.

Re: “A Dream Interrupted

Thanks for encouraging us to read this book. I will get it soon. Your analysis of the
big picture seems spot on, on every level. I have been to Daley plaza. I have a friend who
was at the parade in Dallas as a young woman. I don't believe the Warren Report and
don't know anyone else who does either.
I think the reason so many folks want to keep their guns is the basic distrust so many
have about our govt. I am not a gun person, but I can understand the general uneasiness.
I have also toured the Holocaust Museum and some patterns during the build up of the Nazi era seem to be occurring here. Curtailing freedoms bit by bit, was one thing they did.
What I have to go through to fly nowadays feels incredibly invasive. I often joke with the people undergoing the security system, "well, it was nice undressing with you!" and we all wryly laugh. But we know its not funny.
Thanks for publishing this excellent article. I have seen this man's performances and he is gifted and brilliant. Let's read and heed.

www.orbisbooks.com/jfk-and-the-unspeakable.html
"In JFK and the Unspeakable Jim Douglass has distilled all the best available research into a very well-documented and convincing portrait of President Kennedy's transforming turn to peace, at the cost of his life. Personally, it has made a very big impact on me. After reading it in Dallas, I was moved for the first time to visit Dealey Plaza. I urge all Americans to read this book and come to their own conclusions about why he died and why -- after fifty years -- it still matters."
-- Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

www.orbisbooks.com/a-monthly-letter-from-orbis-books-editor-robert-ellsberg.html
This statement is itself historic: the first time any member of the Kennedy family has publicly endorsed a book that attributes President Kennedy's assassination to a conspiracy involving the military-intelligence establishment of the U.S. government. But what sets Douglass's book apart from the many treatments of Kennedy's assassination is his methodical case for the reasons behind it: to thwart the President's extraordinary turn toward peace, especially his back-channel negotiations with Nikita Khrushchev to dismantle the Cold War. So, elements of his own government viewed the President as a dangerous traitor, one to be eliminated.
Only by remembering this story can we take up the challenge that Kennedy left unfinished—the challenge to make peace our legacy for generations yet unborn.

----

President John Kennedy

Address to the United Nations General Assembly
September 20th 1963

excerpt: full speech at www.jfkmoon.org/un.html

''Finally, in a field where the United States and the Soviet Union have a special capacity--in the field of space--there is room for new cooperation, for further joint efforts in the regulation and exploration of space. I include among these possibilities a joint expedition to the moon. Space offers no problems of sovereignty; by resolution of this Assembly, the members of the United Nations have foresworn any claim to territorial rights in outer space or on celestial bodies, and declared that international law and the United Nations Charter will apply. Why, therefore, should man's first flight to the moon be a matter of national competition? Why should the United States and the Soviet Union, in preparing for such expeditions, become involved in immense duplications of research, construction, and expenditure? Surely we should explore whether the scientists and astronauts of our two countries--indeed of all the world--cannot work together in the conquest of space, sending someday in this decade to the moon not the representatives of a single nation, but the representatives of all of our countries. ....''

"Never before has man had such capacity to control his own environment, to end thirst and hunger, to conquer poverty and disease, to banish illiteracy and massive human misery. We have the power to make this the best generation of mankind in the history of the world--or to make it the last."

-- President John F. Kennedy, September 20, 1963 speech to the UN calling for an end to the Cold War and converting the Moon Race into an international cooperative effort, two months and two days before he was removed from office.

Re: “Gun Crazy

@ Jethro; a good shoot, and to say or imply that because the orange tip of a FAKE gun was missing that that is what makes it so...are you serious. help me out here guy, do u think this because orange is a universal color that automatically signals something to be a replica instead of the actual thing? And lets say hypothetically speaking you encountered a person carrying a gun that was pink? Would you then also think that it was fake... i hope not because you would be absolutely wrong!!!. A female customer in Season 1 Episode 3 of American Guns requested a custom hand gun to be made in the color pink and she got her gun. Is she any less dangerous because its pink... NO!
I urge you to think a bit more outside the box and less with mainstream thinking when considering a missing orange tip to be a deciding factor in your decision to render this tragedy a "good shot".

Re: “Gun Crazy

Police are turning on average American citizens, even children. Police do put their lives on the line when on duty, but their paranoia has caused them to see enemies around every corner. Citizens could look to cops as friends, aiders, and rescuers. But citizens now have a fear of cops and for a very good reason. Can't the cops understand that the tables are turned and they are no longer our friends, our rescuers, but are now a very real source of danger to us? I fear cops now! I do not and can not trust them. They have become thieves, abusers, attackers, and killers. Their own lives are all that matter to them. And it has been so very easy for them to treat all of us citizens as hardened criminals because they get by with it. They are not punished for harming us, instead of protecting us; they are barely given a reprimand. The boy with the toy gun - a very tragic event and handled all wrong by the cop. He was shot before he ever knew the cop was present, before he had a chance to respond. He was shot in the back, a cowardly cop's shot, and then shot again and again and again - overkill!
We citizens have to get cops in line, now, and back to doing their jobs, as our protectors, aiders, rescuers, and friends. Otherwise, the NAZI PARTY will be alive and well in America. We are not bad people. Don't lump us all in with the really bad. Don't hire military people as cops. They were trained for warfare, to kill. We aren't the enemy! One cop was quoted as saying they just wanted to go home alive. What?! They actually believe the citizens are trying to kill them, to keep them from returning to their families at day's end? That's what we all want, to stay alive and return safely to our families. God help us all.
