Re: “Raising My Hand

The mentally ill are the cause of all this carnage in this country. Do you know how long it would take to kill 20 school children and 6 adults with a semi-auto gun or a semi-auto pistol? This killer had to have help,Vice President Joe Biden said, one little girl was shot 11 ,eleven times. How could this be and what was he using besides the guns he had? Look at the time line and when the police were called and who was there besides this killer? Where were the children,in a classroom, hallway, where,we haven't been told by anyone. Where were the adults when he was killing them, all standing in line for him, remember, one shot, one trigger pull, how many magazines did he have and how could he have had the cold bloodiness to reload and still kill these people. Were these children just sitting there or were they running or in a locked room? Do you know what it takes for even the most hardened criminal to kill this many people at one time. The killers mother made a grave mistake in training this young man with mental problems about how to shoot these weapons and then not keeping them in a Gun-Safe and not giving him access to it.You blame the NRA for this carnage and you should be looking at the real problem, not treating the mentally ill and not putting them where they can't harm anyone. This killer tried to buy a weapon from a dealer and couldn't pass a background check, don't you think the police or the FBI should have followed up on this? The NRA and the law abiding are not to blame for this heinous crime no more than you are.

Re: “Letters to the Editor: January 9, 2013

An open letter to Representative Mike Thompson:

Thank you for holding the town hall meeting on gun violence in Santa Rosa last Thursday.
As a responsible gun owner and as a professional firearms instructor, I would like to share the following thoughts with you.

Mental health: It appears from these forums that it is the overall consensus of the public is that the mental health of the individuals who are committing these mass shootings should be the top priority and the issue should be addressed immediately.

Psych drugs: It has been reported that the majority of these crimes were committed by those who were under the influence of prescription drugs or who were self medicating.

Gun free zones: Those public and private areas designated as safe zones (schools, shopping malls, etc.) are invitations to those who want to inflict maximum harm to their victims, knowing that they will not be confronted until police arrive on the scene. The NRA has recently been critiized for suggesting that armed guards be provided in schools, however it was former president Bill Clinton who originally suggested the "cops in schools" program in 1998.

High capacity magazines: Here in California we can legally possess magazines with no more than 10 rounds. If the same law is enacted nationally and another mass shooting occurs with 10 round magazines being used, do we ban those in favor of 5 round magazines or 3 round magazines, or back to single shot firearms? Where do we stop limiting the rights of the law abiding?

Assault rifles: The misconception of what an "assault rifle" is needs to be clarified. The majority of rifles available to the public these days are "semi-automatic", meaning that the trigger must be pulled each time in order to fire one round. Fully automatic weapons have been unavailable to the general public since the 1930's and are used today primarily by the military and some law enforcement agencies.
Some of these "semi-automatic" rifles are called "assault rifles" mostly due to the fact that they have been designed to imitate the visual appearance of military weapons and look intimidating to some.

The bias media: Violence is constantly glorified in movies, television shows, video games, etc. influencing young, impressionable and disturbed minds that by committing acts of violence it will give them the attention that they desire. After a mass shooting the media is quick to immortalize the instigator of these crimes to celebrity status by giving them national coverage. However, when a crime in progress is stopped by a responsibly armed citizen, the citizen who risked their own life to stop the crime receives minimal press coverage, if any.

Gun owners and the Law: It is responsibility of all gun owners to keep their firearms out of the hands of unauthorized persons by securing them when not in use. In order for the background system to work, stiffer penalties should be in place for people who break the law (a straw purchase) by buying a firearm for a family member, a friend or a neighbor.

Training & education: I firmly believe that all gun owners need education and hands on training in order to operate a firearm safely and accurately. However, I am divided over whether the government should mandate such training.

The 2nd Amendment: Established by the founding fathers to insure that citizens had the means with which to defend themselves against tyrannical forces, both foreign and domestic,

It is becoming increasingly clear that the Obama administration is intent on using “any means necessary” to restrict the average citizen’s rights to own and carry firearms by exploiting devastating events in order further their gun control agenda.

To feast without fears. Many good points, Turkeys and Mother Earth will appreciate it. Yet we are less what we eat and more what we digest. Some people don't properly digest vegetable proteins, there is no one formula that fits all.

Re: “Dock in the Arbor

In grade school, I vividly remember growing a redwood tree at my desk. I remember planting it in a milk carton and watching it sprout - fascinating for us kids. At the end of our project our class gave them up to be planted in nature. Sometimes I wonder where my little redwood tree now grows. I'm sure it lives strong. This article inspires me to try and get my children's school to look into The Champion Tree Project. Thanks!

Re: “Press Democrat Sold to... Doug Bosco?!

There is much more to this story. People die and lives are ruined when power and greed corrupt law enforcement and the media. The PD has failed to tell the truth on many things for years, now it will only get worse.

Will the alt. media have the backbone to dig deeper?

Re: “Is Raley's Going the Way of Walmart?: Grocery Strike Goes Into Day Four

I am a Raley's customer & I've followed this story closely since it's beginning. As far as I am concerned, the UFCW is almost entirely at fault in this situation. Not the workers, the union itself. If they had protested & picketed & continued to picket every non-union grocery store to open in the Sacramento area, Raley's would still be competing on a level playing field. No company can survive if it is paying double the amount that it's competition pays in wages.

Re: “Is Raley's Going the Way of Walmart?: Grocery Strike Goes Into Day Four

Because of liberalism and Obamas reoccurring laws/policies/themes regarding "Taxing the Rich" , promoting socialism instead of capitalism, and pushing ObamaCare [healthcare] through, this is why businesses and corporations can no longer afford to continue their businesses as they have been in the past and MUST cut their costs NOW. They are in "business" --not a charity. If you voted for Obama and you are picketing, what else did you expect? If you're asking yourself, "What does this have to do with Raley's replacing my good quality healthcare with crappy healthcare?", you do not understand what you voted for when you supported Obama. This is just the tip of the iceburg for the next four years. Educate yourselves, please. It is not the fault of corporations that they must cut costs. I have been a business owner and I have been an employee. It is not the responsibility of an employer to pay a grocery clerk a wage that is commensurate with say, a doctor. Minimum wage [just like Social Security] WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE LIVED UPON. Lowly jobs are supposed to be a stage in one's life ...on their way to obtaining a more skilled job via an education.

Re: “Is Raley's Going the Way of Walmart?: Grocery Strike Goes Into Day Four

It is a shame that people WITH a job are such ingrates. My family is doing everything we can to survive. My family member has no benefits at all. And he takes care of the disabled elderly, supporting those who have given to us. When I go to the store to buy something to support my family, YOU are standing in the way and you're not even working. Go back to work, grow some hair and deal with the challenges we all deal with. Spoiled. I admire the Raley's employees who cheerfully help despite the challenges of wage and other compensatory means of sustenance. Face it, there are people with a hell of a lot less than you and wearing a smile because it takes more integrity to work (meaning not standing around holding a sign while your peers are inside actually doing something to help the customers that support you). Keep it up. Next time you confront me with your fliers, I'll be that much more there to support the hard workers actually seeing to the needs of customers INSIDE you've not managed to annoy away. Four words: GET BACK TO WORK. Be like the rest of us and buck it the hell up. Don't bite the hand that feeds you. Because if you drive its customers away, then in your shortsight you're driving yourself out of a job. Nice going. And to all you I enflame, go ahead and hit that red button below. Because that is what I'm doing every time you confront my space going into the store to support YOU and MY family. Really, hit the red button, but it won't keep me from supporting my neighborhood store and the kind people who helped me inside after a long day of my own work. Be grateful for what you have. Amen.

I'm just a costumer, no skin on the game but I Just took some Starbucks to the picket line! Between corporate profits and living wage and benefits for their employees, as a costumer, I side with the employees. Mr.Teel I go to your stores because the quality of your produce and because your employees give me superb costumer service, that's your competition edge! What you cannot afford is to lose my business and that is what you are doing right now.
