I've read the story twice now, and I still don't know why I put that giant eyeball there.
You've got to read the story to find out!
Yeah, what IS up with that eyeball, anyway?

Nicolas Grizzle - May I quote that ending? Profound Statement..
Dear Editor: America is hooked on war, and although some Americans might not realize that, you can be sure the rest of the world does, as it looks at Afghanistan, Iraq and other places around the world where the U.S. has fought wars, threatened to fight wars, sent armed forces or launched missiles in their stead. They're so ignorant of the rest of the world, the last thing they need to be doing is meddling in Afghanistan and Iraq. As the old saying goes, "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
It's incredible that the governments of the world are on track to invest nearly a trillion dollars a year in killing people. You can't tell me that much is spent on weapons for "defense" and "self-protection." War is profit to many U.S. weapons makers and manufacturers, who make enormous amounts of money selling arms and material not only to the U.S. government but also to many others around the world.
They call them terrorists because the world hates. It seems to me that people who kill others without proof of their guilt, or even without being sure who they're killing, are terrorists themselves.
Ted Rudow III,
Thanks, Luis - you're right.
SoCo Supes say they want to fight poverty but the words "upstream investment" come up too frequently in the conversation. It's code for "A stitch in time saves nine" planning - going for prevention instead of repair.
Unfortunately it often means yet another institutional structure.
I say what's more "upstream" than our pregnant daughters and our grandchildren? If you raise my homecare wage from $11.65 an hour to $15 an hour then I can buy the kids and grandkids vitamins, raincoats, bus tickets and decent food.
Doesn't get much more "upstream" than that.
The Living Wage Ordinance could end up saving the county more money than it will be putting out. I believe it will.
Further focus for a real water solution is to immediately stop building cities and subdivisions where there isn't sufficient water available to serve the new residents. California MUST stop sending water away from its source. Californians must learn to live with the water that is available on site. We've seen what happens when water is sent hundreds of miles away, depriving the indigenous wildlife and environment of the water they need. We have to banish the idea that we can build communities without regard for where the water is going to come from.
I went to Santa Rosa Junior College back in 1968-70. We used to eat at the Artic Circle Drive-In. I remember that big plastic white chicken statue called " Acey Bird" When did that place leave Santa Rosa ? Also I remember eating at Rocky,s Pizza Parlor in back of the college on Steele Lane.
He said Joyce Teel is worth 1 billion, not that she made that much in profits or sales. Also, Raley's never opened their books. How can you all be so certain about what Raley's profit margin is if they've neve opened their books? Raley's is privately owned, there is no public record as per how much the company is really worth, how much their profits really are, or their profit margin. So, your math is a waste of time, Concerned Citizen. You don''t have the facts because Raley's never made them available.
Here's my letter to the editor:
I made this for you guys. I hope you like it.

Traumatized Gaza children
The United Nations estimates at least 373,000 Palestinian children require direct and specialised psychosocial support. And based on the total number of adults killed, there may be up to 1,500 children orphaned. Gazan children's right to education has also been severely compromised, with at least 25 schools reportedly damaged so severely that they can no longer be used. The future of Palestinian children in Gaza is extraordinarily bleak.
"The entire population has experienced a deep form of trauma, and there isn't a single family in Gaza who hasn't experienced personally death, injury, the loss of their home. The psychological toll that has on a people, it just cannot be overestimated, and especially on children. I've met children who have experienced extraordinary wounds, who have watched as family members were dismembered before their eyes, obliterated." -- Pernille Ironside, chief of UNICEF's Gaza field office.
The Palestinians are broken by the violence they have been up against for so many years.

Sonoma County Community and Local Law Enforcement Task Force (continued)
The Task force is charged with:
1. Reviewing options for a model for an independent citizen review body.
2. Reviewing and recommending options for community policing to be considered with the Fiscal Year 2014-2015 budget process.
3. Reviewing and recommending whether the Office of Coroner should be separately elected from the Office of Sheriff.
4. Bringing to the Board of Supervisors any additional feedback from the community on these issues that merits County attention by the end of 2014 and discuss staff generated efforts on these issues. These duties are described more completely in the Community and Local Law Enforcement Charter, approved by the Board of Supervisors December 10, 2013.
Re: Policing the Police
There's no need for another petition.
The Sonoma Community and Local Law Enforcement Task Force was created following the tragic shooting death of Andy Lopez by a Sonoma County deputy sheriff to address four important issues necessary for community healing through the convening of 21 representative members of the community and ultimately making recommendations to the Board of Supervisors. The Task Force has been created for a one-year period that will conclude December 31, 2014.

The site Retirement And Good Living has some great guest posts by boomers and recent retirees and what they are doing during this stage in their lives. They are working at staying healthy, sailing full time, starting businesses based on hobbies, RVing across the US and New Zealand, backpacking across the globe, volunteering with the Peace Corps, retired overseas and more. It gives you a good perspective of the possibilities.
