In grade school, I vividly remember growing a redwood tree at my desk. I remember planting it in a milk carton and watching it sprout - fascinating for us kids. At the end of our project our class gave them up to be planted in nature. Sometimes I wonder where my little redwood tree now grows. I'm sure it lives strong. This article inspires me to try and get my children's school to look into The Champion Tree Project. Thanks!

Green tourism becomes more and more popular, but I think that it is cool to combine green travels with the spirit of adventure. Unknown exotic countries like Ukraine provide perfect opportunities for such combinations. This unexplored and “savage” country has vast rural areas without any footprints of civilization. What this scientist is saying is dead serious. This is not some philosophical
argument.
There is nothing more basic than what you eat. Your body has evolved over millions of years to protect your system from foreign proteins.
Genetically modified organisms not only have the genes from other species inserted in their DNA, i.e. soil bacteria genes in plants, fish genes in plants, other plant genes in plants, but in addition, all manner of uncontrolled odd combinations and recombinations of genes that cause your body to go into defense inflammatory mode every time you eat this junk.
Result? Allergies, stomach disorders, autism, arthritis, breast and prostate cancers.
This is not even mentioning the special pesticides like Roundup that the plants are
custom modified to resist in large amounts and that leaves residue in factory food.

“The two tested products are in very common use : (i) a transgenic maize made tolerant to Roundup, the characteristic shared by over 80% of food and animal feed GMOs, and (ii) Roundup itself, the most widely used herbicide on the planet. The regulatory approval process requires these products to be tested on rats as a surrogate for humans.
The new research took the form of a two year feeding trial on 200 rats, monitored for outcomes against more than 100 parameters. The doses were consistent with typical dietary/ environmental exposure (from 11% GMO in the diet, and 0.1 ppb in water).
The results, which are of serious concern, included increased and more rapid mortality, coupled with hormonal non linear and sex related effects. Females developed significant and numerous mammary tumours, pituitary and kidney problems. Males died mostly from severe hepatorenal chronic deficiencies. Professor Seralini's team in the University of Caen is publishing this detailed study in one of the leading scientific international peer-reviewed journals of food toxicology, on line on Sept. 19, 2012.
The implications are extremely serious. They demonstrate the toxicity, both of a GMO with the most widely spread transgenic character and of the most widely used herbicide, even when ingested at extremely low levels, (corresponding to those found in surface or tap water). In addition, these results call into question the adequacy of the current regulatory process, used throughout the world by agencies involved in the assessment of health, food and chemicals, and industries seeking commercialization of products.”

Your article is short and makes bold statements. There is a massive amount of scientific evidence to back it up and the cat's out of the bag as far as GMOs among people that know and care about the quality of the food they eat.
However, many people will be fooled by the folksy propaganda put out by these hundred billion dollar transnational corporations. The online newspapers in the interior of the state and in L.A. are full of banner ads with headings like this:
"My dog food has to be labeled but not my steak"
"Your right to know" crossed out and replaced with "your right to sue"
"This pizza has to be labled-this one doesn't"
Simplistic messages to simplify a complex issue and get people to vote for their own destruction. Unfortunately, most of the votes in the state are in places where the misinformation is targeted.
Don't take this campaign for granted folks, they'll spend any amount of money to defeat Prop 37. Imagine that this is the most vital campaign of your life and work accordingly.

Thanks, Juliane, for this wonderful article on the Petaluma dance. I've been contra dancing a number of years now and found the contra dance community to be welcoming no matter where you're dancing. Besides that it's fun, it's a good workout, it clears away the cobwebs from working in front of the computer, and I like being part of and carrying on a tradition that goes back a ways but is evolving (there's now "techno contra" although we haven't pulled that off yet in the North Bay!).

I'm all for homemade cleaning products, but have you ever tried them? the problem with vinegar -- which is a wonder cleaner, no doubt -- is that your house ends up smelling like a jar of mayonnaise. i tried mixing it with lemon, but it still smells like vinegar. Blech.
