Re: “Sell Your Guns to the Government

Sad but true. When I was a kid, you could not shoot nor own a gun until you passed a "Hunter's Safety Course" at a local shooting range. One was taught resposible firearm control and safety. ( and they might have been checking you out for mental issues also). You were not allowed to obtain hunting license until you passed. Why would anyone want a high powered firearm for anything else? What happened?

Re: “Raising My Hand

The mentally ill are the cause of all this carnage in this country. Do you know how long it would take to kill 20 school children and 6 adults with a semi-auto gun or a semi-auto pistol? This killer had to have help,Vice President Joe Biden said, one little girl was shot 11 ,eleven times. How could this be and what was he using besides the guns he had? Look at the time line and when the police were called and who was there besides this killer? Where were the children,in a classroom, hallway, where,we haven't been told by anyone. Where were the adults when he was killing them, all standing in line for him, remember, one shot, one trigger pull, how many magazines did he have and how could he have had the cold bloodiness to reload and still kill these people. Were these children just sitting there or were they running or in a locked room? Do you know what it takes for even the most hardened criminal to kill this many people at one time. The killers mother made a grave mistake in training this young man with mental problems about how to shoot these weapons and then not keeping them in a Gun-Safe and not giving him access to it.You blame the NRA for this carnage and you should be looking at the real problem, not treating the mentally ill and not putting them where they can't harm anyone. This killer tried to buy a weapon from a dealer and couldn't pass a background check, don't you think the police or the FBI should have followed up on this? The NRA and the law abiding are not to blame for this heinous crime no more than you are.

Re: “Letters to the Editor: January 9, 2013

An open letter to Representative Mike Thompson:

Thank you for holding the town hall meeting on gun violence in Santa Rosa last Thursday.
As a responsible gun owner and as a professional firearms instructor, I would like to share the following thoughts with you.

Mental health: It appears from these forums that it is the overall consensus of the public is that the mental health of the individuals who are committing these mass shootings should be the top priority and the issue should be addressed immediately.

Psych drugs: It has been reported that the majority of these crimes were committed by those who were under the influence of prescription drugs or who were self medicating.

Gun free zones: Those public and private areas designated as safe zones (schools, shopping malls, etc.) are invitations to those who want to inflict maximum harm to their victims, knowing that they will not be confronted until police arrive on the scene. The NRA has recently been critiized for suggesting that armed guards be provided in schools, however it was former president Bill Clinton who originally suggested the "cops in schools" program in 1998.

High capacity magazines: Here in California we can legally possess magazines with no more than 10 rounds. If the same law is enacted nationally and another mass shooting occurs with 10 round magazines being used, do we ban those in favor of 5 round magazines or 3 round magazines, or back to single shot firearms? Where do we stop limiting the rights of the law abiding?

Assault rifles: The misconception of what an "assault rifle" is needs to be clarified. The majority of rifles available to the public these days are "semi-automatic", meaning that the trigger must be pulled each time in order to fire one round. Fully automatic weapons have been unavailable to the general public since the 1930's and are used today primarily by the military and some law enforcement agencies.
Some of these "semi-automatic" rifles are called "assault rifles" mostly due to the fact that they have been designed to imitate the visual appearance of military weapons and look intimidating to some.

The bias media: Violence is constantly glorified in movies, television shows, video games, etc. influencing young, impressionable and disturbed minds that by committing acts of violence it will give them the attention that they desire. After a mass shooting the media is quick to immortalize the instigator of these crimes to celebrity status by giving them national coverage. However, when a crime in progress is stopped by a responsibly armed citizen, the citizen who risked their own life to stop the crime receives minimal press coverage, if any.

Gun owners and the Law: It is responsibility of all gun owners to keep their firearms out of the hands of unauthorized persons by securing them when not in use. In order for the background system to work, stiffer penalties should be in place for people who break the law (a straw purchase) by buying a firearm for a family member, a friend or a neighbor.

Training & education: I firmly believe that all gun owners need education and hands on training in order to operate a firearm safely and accurately. However, I am divided over whether the government should mandate such training.

The 2nd Amendment: Established by the founding fathers to insure that citizens had the means with which to defend themselves against tyrannical forces, both foreign and domestic,

It is becoming increasingly clear that the Obama administration is intent on using “any means necessary” to restrict the average citizen’s rights to own and carry firearms by exploiting devastating events in order further their gun control agenda.

Re: “The Straight Dope

In case you didn't read the actual patent you are referencing, Saavy, it does not patent cannabis, but patents research towards a specific delivery system of isolated cannabinoid molecules (and the patent has since expired). And while I do find it wholly disingenuous of the Fed Govt to classify cannabis as a Schedule I drug while behind the curtain it (in conjunction with pharmaceutical companies) funds research into cannabis' medical properties , this is not news. Just look at the disaster known as Marinol.

I'm just curious: Exactly what statement(s) in the article inspired you to make the claim that it is proto-Feds/Big Pharma?

Re: “Top Torn Tix 2012

First and foremost, I think it is important to remember that this article was written by a person offering his *opinion*. While this person gets paid to offer his opinion, and many readers put stock in it because of this, I think we can all agree that the arts are a VERY subjective field. What's sauce for the goose may be poison for the gander. Second, even if Mr. Templeton's voice were law--and I am sure that even he would agree it is not--I have not seen all ten shows on this list. And even if I had, I was also on stage as an 'intrepid member' of August: Osage County, and could not offer a truly objective opinion of the show. Regarding the craft itself, I would have to agree with theatrgoer37 re: DTA's opening comment. I don't think it is good form to down-talk my fellow storytellers. Our work is rewarding, certainly--but it is also difficult and challenging for all who aspire to it whole-heartedly. There is nothing more hurtful or infuriating than hearing an audience member--or, especially, a fellow artist--make a comment that trivializes that effort. In that vein, I will also respectfully disagree with the assessment of others on the comment thread that a show like BATB should be appreciated for its 'effort.' The idea that a show is good "especially when you consider [it was produced] primarily by students" is also, in my opinion, demeaning. I have met more than my fair share of people in theater who are union members and aren't worth the title, and those who have 'day jobs' who are the pinnacle of professionalism and hard work. But, ultimately, the work we do is for the audience's benefit, and if they leave the theater richer people, we have done our job. If we step onto that stage for anything less--especially something selfish like accolades or awards--we are doing a disservice to ourself, our production mates, and the audience.

Re: “Top Torn Tix 2012

The Beauty and the Beast cast did amazing! Not only is the music difficult to live up to but it has held an amazing record on Broadway, maybe I am biased by being a SRJC student but I also saw the original broadway cast of Beauty and the Beast. I know this show very well and I must remark I have never seen a performance of this musical by a non-professional production that put more energy and enjoyment into the play. Normally I bored with school Beauty and the Beast but thankfully this production team as well as the cast created something fresh not simply copy cating the original. The acting was not flat, in fact I felt it was rather strong. This production has been nominated for American Conseveratory Theatre Festival as well as being one of only ten plays or musicals nominated to perform a scene there. Simply put I think it is better to look at the positive rather than the negative, and there is tons. And I know that the set and costumes were all made by the SRJC students during the show. It's about time I think the bohemian recognize a musical and a SRJC production
