Thanks, Juliane, for this wonderful article on the Petaluma dance. I've been contra dancing a number of years now and found the contra dance community to be welcoming no matter where you're dancing. Besides that it's fun, it's a good workout, it clears away the cobwebs from working in front of the computer, and I like being part of and carrying on a tradition that goes back a ways but is evolving (there's now "techno contra" although we haven't pulled that off yet in the North Bay!).
Besides the official website, readers can find us on Facebook too - there's an article there called "What Is Contra Dance?" that answers the most commonly asked questions about it: “Will it be difficult? Will anyone ask me to dance? What do I wear? What if I make a fool of myself?!…”

We have contra dances each week – 1st Sunday in Petaluma, 2nd Saturday in San Rafael, 3rd Friday in Santa Rosa, and 4th Saturday in Sebastopol.
And for those who can't quite overcome the dizziness problem with all those hot swings, you can get that same great sense of community with less G-force at the Sebastopol English Country Dances on the 1st and 3rd Sunday afternoons. Here's a link: http://www.nbcds.org/english.html

Re: “A Picture of Tragedy”
What a shock to read about Mark's murder. He was a really fine person: intelligent, kind, thoughtful. My heart goes out to the family; they are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope the justice system will listen to their plea for compassion and mercy for the mentally ill son.
