In preparation for “Bear” Throop spent a year studying bears: sketching them at the zoo, drawing their skulls at the Academy of Sciences, visiting their habitats in Pepperwood Preserve and Albion and filling four notebooks with exquisitely drawn studies. The resulting exhibition of 20 oil paintings follows the American black bear through richly hued dreamscapes. “Bear” is an exploration of what CG Jung called “the bear with glowing eyes deep in the human unconscious.”
