Stephanie Syjuco throws shade on consumer culture

Should you find yourself in a San Francisco gift shop where every single stock item is orange—tote bags, aprons, key chains, postcards, dishware, pennants, even wraparound tops—you won't need to search for the checkout stand. You are in fact not in a store, but rather "The International Orange Commemorative Store (A Proposition)," an art installation by San Francisco–based artist Stephanie Syjuco.

Syjuco, who appears at di Rosa in Napa on July 12, is a mixed-media artist with a knack for cultural-statement art; International Orange Commemorative Store takes a sly dig at the commercialization of the Golden Gate Bridge's 75th anniversary and its attendant plastic memorabilia. Known for these types of politically driven installations and sculpture, Syjuco's art reflects cultural, social and economic structures around the world, often created with up-cycled materials. Her art has been termed "bootleg" and "counterfeit" as she utilizes pre-existing items, re-appropriating them to establish a different point of view.

In an ongoing collaboration with KQED's Spark, Stephanie Syjuco appears in an artist talk on Thursday, July 12, at di Rosa's Gatehouse Gallery. 5200 Sonoma Hwy., Napa. $5–$10. 7pm. 707.226.5991.—Holly Abrahams
