The excellent folks at the Marin Agricultural Land Trust (MALT) were surprised--but thrilled--to learn that Ross restaurant Marché aux Fleurs is once again hosting an Earth Day dinner in their honor, passing the proceeds on to MALT. Focusing on sustainable, locally grown foods, Marché owners Dan and Holly Baker strive to purchase the majority of their produce at the twice-weekly Civic Center farm markets and buy their bread from the local Brickmaiden Bakery. Earth Day at Marché aux Fleurs is on Tuesday, April 25, this year and features a five-course sustainable tasting menu for just $48. Meanwhile, the Station House Cafe in Point Reyes Station celebrates Earth Day by donating 10 percent of all proceeds on Friday, April 21, to the Marin Organic nonprofit, also located in West Marin. Without even aiming to be part of a trend, the Station House was one of the first North Bay restaurants to serve Niman Ranch meats, Hog Island and Johnson's Bay oysters, astounding bread from area bakers, and shade-grown, locally roasted coffee.

"I just joined Marin Organic last month, and I'm really excited about that because they share a lot of the same goals and values as I do," says Station House owner Sheryl Cahill. "We have a new chef here, David Cook, and we are working toward building our relationship with local farmers. We just hired a new gardener from Green Gulch, who is going to make our little garden bloom. Marin Organic is part of the school lunch program, so it's a way to contribute indirectly to that. It's supporting the local farmers, which maintains the integrity of the land. We get a lot of people through here," Cahill says, referring to the international tourist flavor West Marin enjoys in the summer months, "and by bringing local food to the table, people can really begin to taste the difference for themselves." Annapurna Restaurant in Santa Rosa supports a different cause on Thursday, April 27. Specializing in Himalayan food, the restaurant is donating 25 percent of every dinner check to Catholic Charities to aid that nonprofit with its immigration services. The Charities' immigration arm helps with family reunification in the United States, as well as providing some courses on navigating the muddy waters of citizenship and helping new arrivals to learn English.
