The Flanders Panel by Arturo Perez-Reverte. A story about a 15th-century murder mystery.

Dreaming by Carolyn See. An autobiography by a Washington Post book reviewer.

Suadade by Katherine Vaz. A story about being in one country and longing for another.

Samurai's Garden by Gail Pasukiyama. A Chinese man is sent to Japan to recover from tuberculosis during WWII.

Rumors of Peace by Ella Lefland. A coming-of-age story about a young girl in Northern California during WWII.

Morality Play by Barry Unsworth. A meditation on power, this is a 14th-century thriller about a priest who runs away from the priesthood to join a traveling circus.

Invisible Circus by Jennifer Egan. A semi-autobiographical story about two sisters growing up in San Francisco in the '60s and '70s.

What It's Like to Live Now by Meredith Maran. Non-fiction about former children of the '60s living in and raising urban kids in the '90s.

Baked Potatoes: A Pot Smoker's Guide to Film and Video by J. Hulme. Nuff said.

Under the Frog by Tobor Fischer. In this Booker Award runner-up, two teens survive life in socialist Budapest in the '50s.

Tales of Burning Love by Louise Erdrich. Her latest novel tells the unlikely story of five ex-wives of the same man, marooned in a storm.

Hill Towns and Colony by Anne Rivers Siddon. Another treat from a popular fiction mistress.

Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder. A novel about the history of philosophy.
