August 12: Mark Farina at the Juke Joint

Posted By on Wed, Aug 4, 2010 at 9:00 AM

Man, the era of the mid- to late-’90s was a trip-hop, chill-out musical heaven. What was causing this propensity to relax? The unfrenzied pace of life? The reruns of Friends? The invention of Prozac? Whatever it was, it sure helped Mark Farina become a star. The San Francisco DJ whose Mushroom Jazz series was so ubiquitous and hot-selling that record store employees had its UPC codes memorized, Farina was more than just a lucky guy in the right place at the right time. Anyone who’s vibed out to his perfectly paced mixes or zoned to his groove-heavy live sets knows that he hasn’t lost his edge, even 18 years after the first Mushroom Jazz appeared on cassette in 1992. He hits up the Juke Joint on Thursday, Aug. 12, at Hopmonk Tavern. 230 Petaluma Ave., Sebastopol. 9:30pm. $15. 707.829.7300.
