Re: “A Vine Mess

The wine grape growers won't be happy until all the hillside forests are gone. Unless there is some protection, clearcutting and conversion will continue unabated. I hope this measure is allowed on the ballot (yet to be determined), and that the voters put the environment ahead of money and booze.

Re: “Slow Down

Napa County is even worse than Sonoma County regarding proliferation of vineyards and wineries. The county has granted amnesty for wineries that have exceeded production, visitor count or events allowed by their permits. When the wineries seek amnesty, not only are they forgiven, the county then grants them approval to expand beyond what they were doing illegally! Our water table declines every year, and our roads become more and more choked with traffic, but the officials seem oblivious to the quality of life for us who live here. Also, I read today that droughts may get worse in our state.…

Re: “Still Here

Perhaps a few less tourists would be a good thing. This region has become overrun with tourists much of the time, way too many for the roads of the area to be able to handle. I am reminded of the dilemma of the cat lady- a few cats are fun and nice companions, but too many of them and you have a stinking mess.

Re: “New Era on Tap

Thank you, Stett, for this great article. Your investigative reporting is far better than the meager attempts by the Napa Register and the Press Democrat.

Re: “Of Water and Wine

Great article. Thank you Stett, for writing it and for publishing it in the Bohemian. I live on a hillside in the Napa Valley about a mile from the proposed Calistoga Hills Resort. A neighbor of mine cleared many acres of beautiful hillside forest and planted vineyard in its place. The chainsaws, tractors, and excavators were operating at all hours and days of the week on and off over several years time. The county and the state have no issue with a clear-cut like this, and I don't think he is done yet as there are still some trees left on his property. I wonder how many more "conversions" will be taking place on the hills of this county, since there is no agency that restrains greedy owners from cutting all the trees on a property.
