War gardening, or victory gardens, was first promoted in WWI, as a means for people to produce more food and consume less, leaving the bulk of the country's harvests available for shipping to the troops and to Europe. Citizens were encouraged to grow food on all unused land, including parks, schools, backyards and vacant lots.
